Can exercise stall disability? Study seeks answers

Associated Press
Can exercise keep people independent and prevent disability as they age?

Researchers are seeking participants for a big government study that could provide answers.

Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine is one of eight centers involved in the National Institutes of Health study. More than 1,000 patients aged 70 to 89 will take part. Northwestern hopes to enroll 200.

Participants will be randomly assigned to do a structured physical activity program, such as walking and strength exercises. Or they will be enrolled in health education workshops and supervised stretching. Enrollment will last up to four years.
