Potential police torture jurors eyed

Associated Press

Dozens of potential jurors have filled out a 29-page questionnaire as officials get ready for the trial of a former Chicago police official charged with lying about the alleged torture of murder suspects decades ago.

Former police Lt. Jon Burge listened Thursday as federal Judge Joan Lefkow said the questionnaire is designed to make sure he gets a fair trial. What she termed the actual process of selecting a jury starts May 24.

Burge was the former commander of a violent crimes unit on Chicago's South Side. He was fired after he became the center of allegations that murder suspects were beaten and otherwise tortured.

Burge has pleaded not guilty to perjury and obstruction of justice.
