Earth Day activities planned around the city

Defender Staff Report

To help make the neighborhood a more eco-friendly place, more than 100 students on April 22, Earth Day, will flood the Winneconna Park area in Auburn-Gresham near 78th Street and Vincennes Road to collect trash and promote recycling near the park and its waterway, the Auburn Lakes.

Students from four area schools – Betty Shabazz International Charter School, Perspectives-Calumet and Simeon high schools and Westcott Elementary School – will participate in the Greater Auburn-Gresham Development Corp.'s third annual event.

Several Chicago Public Schools throughout the city will also participate in Earth Day activities, according to Malon Edwards, a spokesman for the public school district.

Last weekend, several aldermanic wards participated in “Clean and Green” activities, including the 3rd Ward in the vicinity of 55th and State Streets and the 8th Ward near Grand Crossing Park on East 78th Street.
