Child dies in suburban Chicago fire

Associated Press
JOLIET, Ill. — An apartment fire has killed a small child in suburban Chicago.

Authorities in Joliet say the boy, believed to be around 5, was found alone in a two-bedroom apartment where the fire started.

Joliet Fire Department Battalion Chief John Zagar says it's not clear if the child had been left home alone or if other occupants had escaped before firefighters arrived.

Zagar says the department was alerted about a blaze at the Evergreen Terrace complex around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. Once firefighters arrived, it took less than 30 minutes to put it out. The boy was declared dead at a nearby hospital.

A few other residents suffered minor smoke inhalation. And Zagar says about 30 people were displaced by the fire.
