Hard, economic times have pushed suburban Riverdale to consider a sale or lease of its village hall to help reduce debt.
“Riverdale is taking a beating from the economy and it has forced us to look at other ways to raise funds,” Riverdale Mayor Deyon Dean told the Defender. “The Village Hall houses the mayor’s and clerk’s offices and other village administrative offices.”
The small town just south of the city has a current deficit of $2.5 million.
The town has not set a price for the facility yet, and the mayor added that no buyer or tenant has been identified for the village hall, located at 157 W. 144th St.
If the sale or lease happens, the mayor’s and clerk’s offices would move to a not-yet-identified location, likely merging with other village office space.
To help reduce the village’s deficit, Dean cut his $35,000 annual salary by two months and he also takes 10 unpaid furlough days.
The mayor, elected last year, said he cut his salary because if he is going asks employees to make sacrifices he felt he needed to do the same.
Once the facility is sold or leased Dean said other village offices would be moved to another municipal building.
