Universities push for action on state budget

Associated Press
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — State universities are pushing Gov. Pat Quinn and the General Assembly to start working on Illinois' budget crisis before it does them permanent damage.

The University of Illinois is appealing to its graduates to write to lawmakers. That follows a letter university presidents sent to Quinn last week urging him to act.

State government is struggling with a $13 billion budget deficit.

Universities and other government-dependent institutions are waiting on overdue state payments. The U of I alone is owed $475.5 million.

University of Illinois President Stanley Ikenberry says he and others plan to lobby in Springfield in the weeks ahead.

The state Senate is considering a measure allow schools to borrow to meet short-term needs.
