SIU med school receives grant to study digestion

Associated Press
A researcher at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield has been awarded a five-year federal grant to study digestion.

The $1.7 million project will be funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. That's a division of the National Institutes of Health.

Victor Uteshev, assistant professor of pharmacology at SIU, is the principal investigator.

The study will investigate a class of compounds used in medications and determine how they affect neurons controlling the digestive system. The results may lead to new ways to improve digestion.

This is the third grant awarded for Uteshev's research. He joined the SIU faculty in 2006.
