Recycling events offer Christmas trees new life

Associated Press
Illinois municipalities and organizations are offering the chance to turn real Christmas trees into gifts that keep on giving.

Starting Friday, nearly two dozen Chicago parks will accept trees and turn them into mulch. The mulch will be available for pickup in early January.

In Winnebago County, a group called Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful also turns trees into mulch and each year collects more than 35,000 trees.

In addition to mulch, used trees can also be turned into underwater fish habitats and bird feeders.

Officials ask that all decorations, including the tree stand, be removed before the trees are recycled.
