Ice knocks out power in Ill.

Associated Press

Icy conditions are knocking out power in parts of northern Illinois.

A spokeswoman for the ComEd utility says nearly 30,000 of its customers have lost power.

Marie Turrell says most of the outages, about 28,000, are in and around Rockford. She's says only a few hundred customers in the Chicago area are without electricity.

Accumulating ice on trees is causing branches to break and then fall onto power lines.

ComEd has 143 crews working on the problem and hopes it can restore power to most locations on Thursday. But Turrell says some customers may have to wait more than a day.
