Black Wall Street District gets nod from state Senate

Special to Defender
An area on the South Side known as the Black Wall Street District was recognized by the Illinois State Senate earlier this month.

The Senate passed the resolution of recognition for the area east of the Dan Ryan Expressway on 75th Street as district “experiencing a revitalization of Black-owned businesses dedicated to creating jobs, providing quality products and services to the community” following in the steps of the original Black Wall Street District in Tulsa, Okla. and the Black Wall Street District of Oakland, Calif.

Eighty-five percent of the 114 businesses along 75th Street are Black-owned. The Black Wall Street District was initiated in 2007.
