Hynes says no to state borrowing

Associated Press
Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes says he won't support Gov. Pat Quinn's plan to borrow $500 million to pay the state's bills. Hynes sent a letter to Quinn on Friday saying that additional borrowing would put further strain on the state. Hynes, Quinn and Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias must sign off on the borrowing for it to happen. Earlier this week, Quinn accused Hynes of playing politics by not quickly signing off on the loan. Hynes is Quinn's chief Democratic opponent in the Feb. 2 primary election. Quinn also said earlier this week that Giannoulias' office is "ready to go" but the treasurer's office said that was premature. Copyright 2009 The Associated Press.
