The city’s winter parking ban goes into effect Dec. 1 and already motorists are preparing for the worst.
From 3 a.m. to 7 a.m., whether or not snow is present, motorists are prohibited from parking in designated areas where signs are posted.
The ban, which runs until April 1 and covers 107 miles of city streets, resulted in 167 cars being towed in 2008 on the first night of the parking ban, according to Thomas Byrne, commissioner for the city’s Department of Streets and Sanitation.
He added that the ban is needed to ensure vital areas in the city are clear of cars should an emergency occur, especially when snow is present.
“It is very important for our residents who park on the street to work with us to keep these critical routes open to full capacity by obeying the winter parking regulations,” said Bryne.
Street signs for this seasonal restriction are permanently posted and ignoring them could cost motorists a $150 towing fee, a $50 ticket and a daily storage fees as well.
