Circuit Breaker benefits expanded

by Kathy Chaney
Medication costs and property tax relief benefits are expanded under Circuit Breaker program for seniors.

The income limitations for seniors to qualify for Illinois Cares Rx was raised, allowing more seniors to qualify, according to state Rep. Monique Davis, D- 27th.

The Circuit Breaker program is available to seniors age 65 and older who meet the income requirements and anyone who is permanently disabled. Seniors who meet the qualifications may be eligible for a Circuit Breaker grant for property tax relief, license plate discount and Illinois Cares Rx, which offers coverage for prescription medications. Income requirements vary based on the program, and applications must be postmarked no later than Dec. 31, 2009.

“As state services have taken a hit from recent budget cuts, it is vitally important that we do all we can to help seniors and disabled citizens. I strongly encourage anyone eligible for these programs to apply as soon as possible to take full advantage of these benefits,” said Davis.

Those eligible can apply online at www.cbrx.il.gov.
