Gov. Pat Quinn is defending the creation of new taxpayer-funded jobs amid the state's growing budget problems.
Quinn signed an executive order over the weekend creating a state public health advocate. Less than two weeks ago, Quinn named a new czar to help increase business opportunities for minority- and women-owned enterprises.
The new diversity enhancement director will be paid $110,000. Quinn says the person eventually named as public health advocate won't "cost the taxpayers much at all."
Quinn says some of the people in these new jobs were already in state government and got new assignments. The diversity czar was previously deputy director of operations for the state's Capital Development Board.
The governor says a public health advocate is needed even though the state has a public health director.
