Injured Ill. servicemembers can apply for grants

Associated Press
Gov. Pat Quinn has signed legislation that allows Illinois servicemembers who have been injured abroad to apply for $5,000 grants.

The legislation is effective immediately.

The grants come from the donation-based Illinois Military Family Relief Fund. The fund was created in 2003.

The grants are available to active duty Illinois servicemembers who have been deployed after the Sept. 11 attacks and who have sustained injuries as a result of hostile action.

Each grant recipient receives a minimum of $5,000 and can get just one grant for each incident that resulted in injuries.

The Illinois Department of Military Affairs will oversee the program.
