A ribbon-cutting and dedication of 75th Street, east of the Dan Ryan Expressway, known as the Black Wall Street District in Chicago will occur on Aug. 29.
Eighty-five percent of the 114 businesses along 75th Street are Black-owned, the perfect reason for the strip to be patronized by the Black community and recognized as the Black Wall Street District, according to Ron Carter, chairman of Black Wall Street Chicago.
Initiated in 2007 and modeled after the Black Wall Street District in Oakland, Calif., the summit’s mission is to enhance and strengthen the commerce district through continual promotion, advocacy, business development and community relations; keep the district clean, safe and viable; and maintain a method of exchanging and interchanging information between business members.
A parade will kick off at 10 a.m. on the corner of 76th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue, with the dedication to follow at noon on 75th Street and Eberhart Avenue.
