Illinois school cafeterias to get $3.6M in grants

State officials say hundreds of Illinois schools are getting $3.6 million to improve cafeterias.

The Illinois State Board of Education will distribute the federal grants.

The money goes toward equipment to improve the quality of meals, increase energy efficiency in appliances like refrigerators and increase participation in school meals programs.

Schools had to apply to get the grants, and preference was given to lower income schools.

State Education Superintendent Christopher Koch (COOK) says good nutrition gives students a better chance to succeed in the classroom.
