Ann Nesby talks about her new project, weight loss

by Effie Rolfe

Recently, gospel powerhouse Ann Nesby was in town to promote her latest album, "Lula Lee Project," on Tyscot Records. The Joliet native was also enjoying relatives while attending a family reunion. Although I was eager to chat about her hot new single that landed at No. 25 on the Billboard charts, I also wanted to find out her formula for losing 129 pounds and looking absolutely fabulous.

Chicago Defender: You look great. I have to ask what did you do, go on a diet?

Ann Nesby: Absolutely not (chuckles). I had some great help. I had a wonderful doctor and I had the gastric bypass surgery in 2005. After I had the gastric bypass, I had gone through a series of health issues, congestive heart failure, diabetes and high blood pressure. I was afraid to do the surgery, afraid of what it entailed. In January, I said, ‘OK God you know I’ve got to do something different.’ And my doctor said, “Ann, you can’t continue this way and we don’t want to lose you and you really need to pray about it and think about it.” After that I had the little bout. It was a scary time. I said, ‘God, it is in your hands. If I am going to be an ambassador for you, my health must be in order.’ I couldn’t even walk through the airport without sitting down and taking a rest, ringing wet with sweat, late night eating and not exercising. I had to change my whole lifestyle. I underwent the surgery the Monday following Easter. I no longer have to take anything for my diabetes and I have never felt better since I was a teenager.
