No bail for man in pipe bomb case

A judge has denied bail for an 85-year-old prisoner caught on tape talking about his ties to Al Capone and other old-time mobsters.

During Monday's hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Sidney Schenkier said he believes Samuel Volpendesto represents a clear danger.

Volpendesto has been in custody for more than a year, charged with setting off a pipe bomb that wrecked a company that distributed video poker equipment.

Prosecutors say the bomb was designed to warn the company to stop horning in on mob business.

Schenkier acted after federal prosecutor T. Markus Funk told him that Volpendesto had been captured on tape boasting about his involvement with Chicago crime boss Sam Giancana and that he was "one step removed from Al Capone."
