URBANA, Ill. — The handful of people who frequent a small courtyard that serves as a World War I memorial at a University of Illinois building now being renovated hope the space and its centerpiece won't be lost in the shuffle.
The Lincoln Hall Memorial Court was a gift from the classes of 1918 and 1919 and dedicated in 1969. The centerpiece sculpture is by former U of I landscape architect Donald Molnar.
Assistant Dean Matthew Tomaszewski (tom-uh-SHEV'-skee) says the sculpture is being moved out during the $65 million renovation. He isn't sure what will happen after the work is done.
University archivist William Maher says he found the area when he came to the school in 1978. He says the loss of the space would be a shame.
