NIU libraries get major grant

DEKALB, Ill.— Northern Illinois University has won a $190,000 federal grant.

The money from the U.S. Department of Education will help NIU libraries digitize materials related to Southeast Asian studies.

A press release from U.S. Rep. Bill Foster's office says the idea's partly help make the material more accessible and to preserve it. A larger goal is to promote instruction in several Southeast Asian languages, including Indonesian, Javanese and Vietnamese.

The director of Digital Projects at Northern Illinois University Libraries, Drew VandeCreek, says the school's grateful for the federal support. He says the entire project also demonstrates the university's commitment to Southeast Asian studies.
