Man gets 20-year sentence for stabbing child

JOLIET, Ill.— A suburban Chicago man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for allegedly stabbing his 6-week-old child in the chest.

Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow says 26-year-old Miguel Villarreal of Romeoville received the sentence after being convicted of first-degree murder and aggravated battery of a child.

Glasgow says Villarreal allegedly locked himself in a bathroom with the baby in May 2008 after arguing with the child's mother. He is accused of stabbing the infant twice with a folding knife before stabbing himself in the stomach.

The state's attorney says the knife didn't pierce the baby's chest plate. He says Villarreal recovered after emergency surgery.
