South Africa confirms 12 new swine flu cases

by Michelle Theriault
JOHANNESBURG — South African health officials said Monday that 12 new cases of swine flu have been confirmed, bringing the country's total to 30.

Health ministry spokesman Fidel Hadebe said 11 new cases were connected to a sporting event last week in Johannesburg.

The patients are all male students who attended a squash tournament, he said in a statement. Some had traveled from different provinces, and Hadebe said more infections countrywide were expected as a result.

A further case also connected to the sporting event was confirmed late Monday, said Lucille Blumberg, deputy director of South Africa's National Institute for Communicable Diseases.
