Budget cuts in healthcare

by Briana Barner

The State of Illinois’ plan for budget cuts will affect those who depend on its special medical healthcare programs, among other services. The cuts will involve the closing of various mental health facilities as well as the elimination of substance abuse treatment and prevention services.

It will also bring a 75 percent cut to domestic violence shelters and sexual assault and abuse prevention and a 70 percent cut in child care subsidies.

The Illinois Nurses Association (INA) is concerned about the sharp decline in patient care that would happen as a result of the closing of the mental health facilities. The nurses may lose their jobs, which could lead to patients being transferred to other facilities that may not receive an increase in staff to support the influx of patients.

The INA is opposed to these budget cuts and is fighting to keep these programs and services available to its patients.
