Ill. begins new budget year without new budget

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois is once again beginning a new budget year without a budget.

The old Illinois budget expired Tuesday, but state officials haven't agreed on a new spending plan.

Lawmakers have approved a budget that falls billions of dollars short of covering government costs. Some lawmakers want the governor to figure out where to cut, and others want to add more money later.

Gov. Pat Quinn rejects both options. He wants lawmakers to keep working on a better budget.

State government can keep operating for now without a budget. But the situation creates uncertainty and in a couple of weeks could interfere with paychecks and services.
