Prestigious fellowship awarded to Chicago State art professor

Chicago artist and curator Joyce Owens Anderson has received a prestigious 3Arts Fellowship from the Ragdale Foundation. She is the curator of the galleries programs at Chicago State University and is on the university’s art faculty. Her award in the category of visual artists was one of six presented by the Ragdale Foundation this year.

The fellowship provides a two-week residency at Ragdale, the former summer home of arts and crafts architect Howard Van Doren Shaw in north suburban Lake Forest.

Anderson received her fellowship primarily for her “Out of the Box” series of paintings inspired by a collection of photographs of middle class Black men and women, which was exhibited at the Paris Exposition of 1900. The 3Arts fellowships identify and support highly talented, yet under-recognized artists in music, theater and the visual arts.
