CPS administration shuffle has Blacks in key spots

by Wendell Hutson

The Chicago Public Schools recently made several administrative changes at its headquarters and six Blacks were among those appointed to leadership roles.

The changes, which take effect immediately, are a part of a more efficient, results-oriented organizational structure at CPS, said Ron Huberman, CEO of Chicago Public Schools.

“A few months ago we promised to look at every department and program, and to drill into each of our varied operations and facilities for greater efficiencies and cost-saving measures,” Huberman said. “We said we would not be bound by a mindset that holds to past practices and that all ideas must be considered. (And) by putting in place a new executive team, we are doing exactly that.”

Barbara Eason-Watkins, chief education officer, is the highest ranking Black administrator at CPS and is expected to return next school year, said Monique Bond, director of communications and one of six, newly appointed Black leaders at CPS.

“As far as I know she will be back. I have not heard anything different,” Bond said of Eason-Watkins.

Michael Scott, president of the Chicago Board of Education, who replaced Rufus Williams earlier this year, said meeting CPS' budget deficit ultimately requires some tough choices and sacrifices.

“I know that this new team of leaders and our existing leadership is capable of delivering as we collectively ensure that Central Office operations become as efficient as possible,” Scott said.

Aside from Bond, the other five Black appointees now oversee key departments.

Yes, but when they let me go Monday, http://www.catalyst-chicago.org/RUSSO/index.php/entry/1954/Fired_From_Central_Office, they also let Stephanie Book go because she was white & blond; their mantra will be as follows: "We didn't just fire an outspoken, no kiss-(butt), lefty brown guy, but we also let a talented woman go because that serves our ends."
