Dorothy Brown could make a bid for county board president

Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown said the chances of her running for Cook County Board President next year are good.

“It is highly likely I will run in 2010,” she told the Defender. “I have given myself a 30-day window to decide on what to do.”

She added that in light of Cook County Commissioner Forrest Claypool, D-12th Dist., announcing last week that he would not run again for county board president, she may decide as early as this week.

“I am certainly encouraged to run now that Commissioner Claypool is not running,” Brown said. “But my decision on whether to run or not was never based on him or anyone else running.”

In a Supporters of Dorothy Brown poll done by the clerk’s backers, Brown was favored as the strongest challenger to incumbent county board President Todd Stroger.

The poll gauged name recognition among the three possible Stroger challengers and Brown was known 74 percent of the time; Claypool 71 percent; and 4th Ward Ald. Toni Preckwinkle 40 percent. Some 295 likely voters were polled.

One concern Brown has with her pending candidacy is splitting the Black vote.

Further, among Black voters the poll revealed that Brown would garner 40 percent of the vote with two other Black candidates in the race. But if she were the only Black challenger to Stroger, she would expand her base significantly, according to pollster Dave Fako.

“I would prefer to take either candidate (Stroger or Preckwinkle) one-on-one,” Brown said. “But regardless, people will vote across racial lines and the next county board president will need to be able to win countywide support, not just the Black vote.”
