Mass. cop acquitted of sexual assault

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A North Adams police sergeant has been acquitted of charges that he sexually assaulted a teenage girl.

It took a jury less than two hours to reach the not guilty verdict on two counts of indecent assault and battery on a person under 14.

Sgt. James Foley tells The Berkshire Eagle that he's "relieved" his ordeal is over and wants to get on with his life.

Foley was charged with the first count in January 2008 and a second count was added in October 2008. He has been on administrative leave since the first charge was filed.

The 44-year-old Foley was accused of inappropriately touching the 13-year-old girl, a friend of his son's.

Defense lawyers said the girl's reports of the alleged incident were inconsistent.
