Quinn announces book donation to Chicago school

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has delivered a message of service to graduating 8th-graders on Chicago's South Side.

The Democrat on Tuesday morning announced an award aimed at encouraging students to read this summer. Crispus Attucks Academy has won a 500-book donation from Scholastic Inc.

Quinn encouraged the nearly 40 graduates to have "an ethic of service" and to give back to their communities. He stressed the importance of education and the key role that teachers play.

Quinn says he accepted an invitation to speak at the school because "a governor should salute achievement."

The governor has been touring social service agencies in recent days, highlighting the cuts they and their clients would face if lawmakers don't raise state income taxes.
