Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is sticking by his proposals to raise income taxes even as time runs out to pass a state budget.
Speaking at a Chicago church Sunday, Quinn said people must "sacrifice" for others. He says it's important to have a budget in which Illinoisans "take care of our neighbor."
Quinn tells reporters the state must raise taxes to maintain services for mental health care, education, and for the poor and the unemployed.
State law says legislators must pass a budget by June 30. Quinn is set to meet with lawmakers Tuesday.
The governor says that if a fair proposal isn't put forward soon, he'll lay out the long-term consequences for the state.
