Obama vows not to send people to war without cause

by Darlene Superville

ANNAPOLIS, Md.  — President Barack Obama is promising newly graduated Navy and Marine officers that he will only send young Americans into battle when "it is absolutely necessary" and when the mission is well-defined.

Speaking to this year's graduating class at the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md.

, Friday, Obama talked of the "promise that I make to you." He vowed to give troops whatever equipment and other support they need to get the job done, both now and in the future.

The president said the United States must overcome "the full spectrum of threats" in the world, ranging from the "conventional and the unconventional" and as diverse as 18th century piracy and 21st century cyberwarfare.
