CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A former Tennessee city employee accused of faking breast cancer and duping her employer and others out of more than $100,000 now faces a federal fraud charge.
A one-count federal bill of information accuses 38-year-old Keele Maynor of falsely claiming to have cancer to get sick leave pay from the city of Chattanooga and donations of sick leave from co-workers.
The charges stem from what Maynor has described as a "charade" that included accepting cash, support services and purchases of groceries and meals by co-workers and donations from members of a church.
Maynor acknowledged in a Dec. 12 e-mail to her boss that she has been cancer-free since a scare in 2000. She was arrested on state charges in February. She declined to speak with reporters in court Thursday.
