BELLEVILLE, Ill. — The Defense Department says a weekend explosion in Iraq killed a soldier from southwestern Illinois.
Officials say 27-year-old Army Spc. David Schaefer of Belleville died Saturday in Baghdad after an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit.
He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 172nd Infantry Brigade out of Schweinfurt, Germany.
