WHO official downplays swine flu concerns

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — The World Health Organization's Africa director said the threat of swine flu on the continent pales in comparison to other diseases that kill thousands of Africans each day.

Luis Sambo said Thursday each African country has about 1,000 doses of medication to treat swine flu. He added that only a dozen suspected cases had been found, and he urged countries to share information.

Swine flu has killed 42 people in Mexico and two in the United States, and has infected some 2,000 people in more than 20 countries.

Some 22 million people are living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa.
