Chicago suburb considers pit bull ban after attack

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. — A Chicago suburb is considering banning pit bulls after one mauled a 14-year-old girl, requiring her to get hundreds of stitches.

Highland Park Mayor Michael Belsky on Monday said he's been working with state legislators to amend Illinois law so municipalities can prohibit specific breeds. But regardless of current law, Belsky says he'll propose the ban next week.

He says he hopes other communities will follow the city's lead. Belsky says residents who already own the dogs would be allowed to keep them under increased restrictions.

Deputy Police Chief David Schwarz says the girl was petting the dog Friday when it bit her on the upper arms and face. He says the dog was leashed, and the owner was able to pull him off the girl.
