I’m a 32-year-old married woman writing you because I’m outraged over a rude comment my mother-in-law made to my 16-year-old daughter at a recent family dinner. She told my daughter that she was getting too fat and will never get a man if she didn’t stop packing on the weight. I, too, am concerned about the weight she has gained over the past few years. When I confronted my husband about his mother’s statement about our daughter’s weight issue, he said that his mother was just expressing herself as usual. So now I’m really upset at them both. How can I help my daughter before her weight issue really gets out of hand?

I hate to be the one to co-sign your anger, but your mother in law seems messy and could have definitely found a better way to address your daughter’s weight issue. Your daughter is in a very delicate stage of her life. When weight is an issue with a young person, it is most important that we are supportive and help them lose the weight while offering them emotional support in the process. Explain to your daughter that her grandmother made a terrible mistake by what she said and that as a family you will work together to help her shed the pounds, that she is so much more than just a pretty face. So many of our young people are becoming overweight due to the easy access of fast foods packed full of salt, fat and sugar. Weight loss is all about eating the right foods and portion control. Start by taking your daughter to see her doctor to make sure that she is not suffering from any serious medical conditions. I’m sure your doctor can recommend some type of weight management and fitness program that will get her going. Also remember that your daughter is at the age where she is still growing and that heredity plays a big role in her body type and her weight. At her age, she should be getting as much exercise as possible. Here’s to your daughter blooming into a well-rounded young woman who will live the healthiest life possible. Be encouraged.
