Illinois confirms 82 cases of swine flu

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois health officials are reporting 82 confirmed cases of swine flu.

Tuesday's update is a big jump from Monday when there were nine confirmed cases. That's because Illinois began doing its own confirmation tests over the weekend.

The Illinois Department of Public Health says testing now shows 82 confirmed and 40 probable cases of the virus.

Federal health officials are asking states to take over the responsibility for doing confirmation tests. Illinois began that type of testing on Sunday, and the results show up in Tuesday's tally.
