School board head pushes Olympic support in e-mail

Teachers union officials are criticizing an e-mail from the head of the Chicago Public Schools board encouraging principals to support Chicago's bid to host the 2016 Summer Games.

In an April 22 e-mail to principals, Board President Michael Scott requested that each school register for the promotional event, Olympic Week in America. The note ended with, "You must sign up by Monday, April 27."

A Chicago Teachers Union spokeswoman says the memo's language appeared to force schools to participate. She says that could be difficult as the city's proposal includes closing some schools near Olympic venues.

Scott participated on the Chicago 2016 committee. He later said registrations were "absolutely voluntary" but acknowledged the e-mail was strongly worded.
