Teesee's Town: Higginbottom to be honored at Legacy Award Gala

A virtual “who’s who” in Chicago real estate along with numerous high-level city officials and community leaders are expected at the Second Annual Jane Addams Legacy Award Gala honoring Elzie Higginbottom and East Lake Management & Development Corp. on May 14 at the Museum of Science & Industry.

“Higginbottom has been a key player in the real estate industry for more than 40 years through his experience with the finance, development and management of residential and commercial properties,” so says Clarence Wood, president and CEO of Jane Addams Hull House Association, gala presenter. “He has been a major contributor to the growth and development of Bronzeville as well as many other neighborhoods throughout the city. We celebrate his leadership, understanding and commitment to building safe and affordable housing and communities.”

East Lake Management, a Chicago-based firm that is 100 percent minority-owned, has provided a full range of real estate services to a diverse client base since 1984. Jane Addams Hull House Association has become one of Chicago’s largest non-profit social service agencies. Its mission is to bring together the experience, capability, resources and influence of the entire real estate industry to strengthen neighborhoods and communities across Chicago and surrounding suburbs.

Hull House has more than 50 programs at some 40 sites. It annually impacts 60,000 people from economically, culturally and geographically diverse backgrounds. One focus is to shape public policy by taking actions that lead to responsible, community enhancing development through its Real Estate Leadership Council. Sisterhood Supper – Wanda Sharieff, in town from Arizona for the funeral of her son, McNair Grant Jr., dined at The Parrot Cage (in the South Shore Cultural Center) with a bevy of her loving longtime gal-pals: Juanita Passmore, hostess, Nemi Johnson, Carrie Davis and Darlene Burton Jones. What a lovely gesture of sisterhood!

Halleluyer! – The Rev. Otis Moss III, pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ since June 1, 2008 will be officially installed on May 31, 6 p.m., during “a sacred ceremony commemorating the covenental relationship between a local church and a newly called pastor.”

The installation will be celebrated in a distinctive African-American style in partnership with the Chicago Metropolitan Association of the United Church of Christ. The Rev. Otis Moss Jr., pastor emeritus of Cleveland’s Olivet Institutional Baptist Church, and the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., Trinity’s pastor emeritus who hand-picked his successor, will officiate at the special service.

Installation week begins May 20, 7 p.m., with a Pre-Installation Celebration Service with the Rev. Dr. Cynthia Hale, senior pastor of Ray of Hope Christian Church, Decatur, Ga., followed by Family Community Service Day on May 23, 8 a.m.; another Pre-Installation Celebration Service, May 27, 7 p.m.; Community Celebration, May 29, 7 p.m.; and Installation Concert, May 30, 5 p.m. Installation Sunday begins with worship services: 7:30 a.m., preached by the Rev. Dr. Charles Booth, of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio, and 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Walter Malone, of Canaan Christian Church, Louisville.

Media Mayhem – Brenda Butler, president of the Chicago Chapter of National Association of Black Journalists, was the recipient of “lots of love and support” from her media pals and other buddies last week at NABJ’s Mixer at M Lounge on S. Wabash Ave. Earlier in the day, Brenda was “laid off” from the Chicago Tribune Magazine, where she was senior features editor. She’d been at the Trib for 35 years! Also let go, three brothers, photographers David Trotman-Wilkins, Bradley Piper and picture editor Geoffrey Black; and a sister, copyeditor and designer Devona Alleyne.
