A Cook County judge is set to hand down a verdict in one of two highly publicized cases in which off-duty Chicago police officers were charged after incidents at taverns that were captured on videotape.
Judge Thomas Gainer Jr. presided over the bench trial of three officers that ended weeks ago. He's scheduled to announce his verdict Tuesday.
Officers Paul Powers, Gregory Barnes and Sgt. Jeffery Planey are accused of attacking two brothers. Planey is the only defendant whose alleged crimes were captured by a surveillance camera.
All are charged with aggravated battery. Planey is also charged with official misconduct and obstruction of justice.
In another case, Anthony Abbate is awaiting trial on charges that he beat a bartender.
