Peoria man's trial in baby's starving death begins

PEORIA, Ill. — The trial of a 24-year-old Peoria man accused of starving his 5-month-old son to death has begun with testimony from the man's mother and a pediatrician.

James Sargent is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the February 2008 death of Benjamin Sargent. A pediatrician on Monday testified that the boy was of average weight at his two month checkup but was severely underweight when he died.

James Sargent's mother, Rosemary Sargent, testified she last saw her grandson a few days before his death, when the child was sleeping in his crib. She says Benjamin Sargent wasn't wearing a snowsuit she had bought him.

Prosecutors say John Sargent left the boy without food or water in a car seat for eight days. The baby was found wearing a snowsuit.
