Even though a legally binding agreement is already in place to ensure that minorities benefit from the Olympics should Chicago win the 2016 Games, several community groups are still pushing for another benefits agreement.
The Chicago Center for Urban Life and Culture, a non-profit community organization, is sponsoring an Olympics forum 7 p.m. Friday, April 24, at its office, 1515 E. 52nd Place to discuss why it is important to also have a community benefits agreement.
Denise Dixon, executive director for Action Now, a community group, will be among the panelists discussing why an additional agreement is also warranted.
While Dixon said she is not against the Olympics coming to Chicago, she questions whether Mayor Richard M. Daley is “going to sell out the people of Chicago in the communities where the venues are to be held.”
The purpose of Friday’s forum is to hear all sides of the debate including input from community residents, said Scott Chesebro, executive director for the Chicago Center for Urban Life and Culture.
“These issues are exactly why there is need for a community-based forum where an assortment of voices can be heard and a discussion can take place on the benefits and the drawbacks that Chicago faces if granted the 2016 Olympic bid,” he said.
Other panelists include Dr. Steve Alexander Sr., DePaul University; Glenn Reedus, Chicago Media Money Monetizer; and Tom Tresser, No Games Chicago organization.
