BETHESDA, Md. A young black conductor is creating a new orchestra in the Washington area, even as arts groups across the country are cutting costs and canceling their seasons.
John Baltimore says he's assembling a new model for orchestras for an "untapped" audience. The new D.C. Philharmonic will target the area's affluent Black audience.
On Wednesday, the group announced its maiden concerts will be April 9-10 at the Music Center at Strathmore, located in suburban Bethesda, Md. The venue also hosts the National Philharmonic and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
The 30-year-old conductor is drawing performers from the National Symphony Orchestra and Baltimore Symphony for the initial performances.
