A group of Black ministers voiced their continued support Sunday for embattled U.S. Sen. Roland Burris during an evening worship service at a South Side church.
“Roland is our friend, and we have full confidence in his ability to represent us in Washington,” said the Rev. Albert Tyson.
The coalition of ministers who were at New Covenant Baptist Church service, 740 E. 77th St., said the media is partially to blame for the controversy surrounding the state’s junior senator.
“You're (the media) at his home every morning (and) when he goes to bed,” said the Rev. Janette Wilson. “You didn't do this for (those) priests wanted for pedophilia.”
Burris told the congregation that he was proud of the work he has done so far in the U.S Senate and that he, “will never let you (Illinois residents) down.”
“I will serve you with honesty and integrity. That's all I know, and that's what God gave me,” Burris said.
He added that his short accomplishments in the Senate include his ‘yes’ vote for the president’s stimulus bill and a bill he co-sponsored to honor slaves who built the U.S. Capitol.
