Unlike Christmas, which is a religious holiday that celebrates the birth of Christ, Kwanzaa is a cultural celebration that promotes principles and values centered around family, community responsibility, commerce and self-improvement.
The celebration, started in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, is a time for cultural reaffirmation and reconnection with the African American community and ancestors. It is observed Dec. 26-Jan. 1
Kwanzaa is based on the Nguzo Saba or seven guiding principles:
Umoja—Unity
Kujichagulia—Self-determination
Ujima—Collective work and responsibility
Ujamaa—Cooperative economics
Nia—Purpose
Kuumba—Creativity
Imani—Faith
