EU nations to tighten sanctions against Zimbabwe

BRUSSELS, Belgium— British Foreign Secretary David Miliband says European Union countries have added more Zimbabwe officials to an EU visa blacklist to put added pressure on the country's leader to step down.

Miliband says the tightening of EU sanctions is meant to pressure Zimbabwean officials to stop supporting President Robert Mugabe.

The new measures, passed Monday at a meeting of EU foreign ministers, will add 11 names of mid-level officials linked to Mugabe's government to a sanctions blacklist first drawn up in 2002. The measure is meant to prevent those officials from traveling to the European Union.
