City partied safely during Obama rally

by Kathy Chaney
One million people didn’t show up to Grant Park on Tuesday, but about a quarter of a million did, and they partied for President-elect Barack Obama gracefully.

An estimated 240,000 crammed into Grant Park to share in the historic moment of Obama being elected the nation’s 44th president and the first African American president.

Supporters of all ethnicities –– and ages –– came for one purpose, to see history in the making.

No arrests were made Tuesday in relation to the crowd,  police said.

During a City Council meeting Wednesday, Mayor Richard M. Daley praised rally goers and law enforcement for a job well done.

Daley said many people expected trouble to jump off because of the anticipated crowd of one million, but that wasn’t the case.

Cops on mounted patrol were seen in full force, police helicopters swirled over the downtown park and hundreds of officers were sprinkled throughout the crowd and on the streets surrounding the park, as well as near neighboring hotels along Michigan Avenue.
