Today the Chicago Urban League announced it has amended a civil rights lawsuit against the State of Illinois and the Illinois State Board of Education it originally filed in August for funding disparities between Black and white school districts.
The amended lawsuit adds 11 families from across the state whose children are impacted by poorly funded public schools.
The Tri-County Urban League of Peoria has now joined the Quad County Urban League as a plaintiff in the lawsuit while the Chicago Public Schools considers whether to join.
“Lawsuits take time and are expensive, (but) we may well join the lawsuit,” said Arne Duncan, CEO of Chicago Public Schools. “I applaud the Urban League for taking this action.”
The original lawsuit seeks a court order declaring that the current system of funding public education in Illinois is unconstitutional because it discriminates against families based on race and has deprived Black, Latino and other minority children of a high quality education, and is a violation of the Illinois Civil Rights Act of 2003.
