Suspect charged in fatal CTA shooting

by Kathy Chaney

Chicago police said Milton Wardlaw is the man who pulled the trigger and fatally struck 17-year-old Kiyanna Salter as she rode on a Chicago Transit Authority bus Sunday on the South Side, contrary to his claims of innocence.

The 24-year-old man, of the 7100 block of South University Avenue, was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle.

Wardlaw turned himself in Monday at Evening Star M.B. Church after his mother pleaded for him to come forward.

She saw video footage released from the Chicago Police Department of him on the bus during the timeframe the shooting occurred.

Wardlaw professed his innocence and denied having a gun.

He said the footage should support his statement.

He is on probation for weapons and drug convictions, and is expected to appear today in bond court.
